About Raymond (Ray) Bartus

Raymond T. Bartus, Ph.D., spent nearly half a century as a neuroscientist and biotechnology R&D executive. His early research contributed importantly to the empirical foundation underlying the first four drugs approved for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

Later, while at Alkermes, he conceived and led the early R&D for what became an FDA-approved treatment for alcohol and opioid dependence (Vivitrol®). During that same period, he also conceived and established the initial proof of concept for an inhaled levodopa/carbidopa rescue therapy for Parkinson’s disease. That program was subsequently acquired and further developed by another company, ultimately receiving FDA approval (i.e., Inbrija®).

Still later, in a start-up company, he directed all facets of pioneering gene-therapy programs for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, advancing them from early animal research into several advanced, controlled human clinical trials.

Over the course of his career, he also authored approximately 300 scientific publications and founded the scholarly biomedical journal, Neurobiology of Aging, serving as its inaugural Editor-in-Chief for a decade.

Poetic Scenes emerged only after that career ended—an unexpected shift from scientific investigation toward a very different kind of exploration involving photography, words, perception and meaning.

Poetic Scenes will likely prove to be his final major creative undertaking.
