For those who would like to know a little more…

This page offers some background about Poetic Scenes, its origins, and its collections. Each section stands on its own, so visitors can read whatever interests them—and easily skip whatever does not.

How Poetic Scenes Began

As Ray tells it: “After executing a gradual, soft landing toward full retirement, the wheels finally touched down—permanently—in mid-2023.”

“With more leisurely travel and considerably more unscheduled time, I began noticing interesting scenes I might previously have passed without much thought. I started taking many more photographs—usually quick iPhone shots of something intriguing encountered while traveling or during ordinary daily activities.

In time, I began exploring the pairing of selected photographs with poetic thoughts—usually expressed through brief, carefully crafted titles—to create something deeper, broader, or simply more interesting than either might provide alone.

After completing the first full collection, Pensively Poetic Scenes, I began to wonder whether others might also enjoy spending some quiet time with them—and perhaps occasionally find something that stays with them.”

What Makes a “Poetic Scene”?

Most Poetic Scenes begin with the photograph. Later, a brief title is written specifically for that image—not merely to describe what is visible, but to suggest something the photograph may quietly imply.

Together, the image and its poetic thought create the Poetic Scene: a visual idea, reflection, feeling—or occasionally something simply whimsical—completed through words.

About the Collections

Each collection has its own purpose, mood and personality, with the individual scenes arranged to provide something of a journey.

The first, Pensively Poetic Scenes, moves through several perspectives on our lives: looking within ourselves, living our lives together, and considering the Earth we share. Other collections follow very different paths—toward peace and relaxation, humor, or other forms of reflection.

Despite those differences, all share the same underlying idea: photographs and poetic thoughts brought together to invite another look—and sometimes another thought.
